Tobias F. McDonald, Q.C. , Partner
Toby McDonald was born and raised in St. John’s. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Memorial University in 1972 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1975. Toby was called to the Bar in 1976 and started “Tobias F. McDonald Law Offices” in 1981. Although Toby’s practice has been quite diverse over the years, he currently focuses on real estate, estate planning and probate/administration of estates. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2004; was presented with the Gordon M. Stirling Distinguished Service Award in 2006; and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Throughout his legal career, Toby has also been an active curler and coach, as well as being an enthusiastic community volunteer, particularly in youth oriented organizations.
Susan C. Hounsell, Partner
Susan grew up in Gander and currently resides in St. John’s. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1991 with a French Major and Sociology Minor. She completed her Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of New Brunswick in 1994 and was called to the Bar of Newfoundland and Labrador in April 1995. Susan has been practicing Law with Toby since articling at Tobias F. McDonald Law Offices in 1994 with a focus on family law, corporate, wills and estate planning and personal injury. Susan has served on the Board of Directors, as well as on various Committees, of the Seniors Resource Centre for over 15 years, in many different capacities. She is also actively involved in the Gower Community Band; a volunteer at her children’s school; and enjoys music and dance.
R. Mark Butt
Mark Butt was born in St. John's, but grew up and went to school in Mount Pearl. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at Memorial University in 2006, majoring in English and minoring in French. Soon after, he attended Dalhousie University's Schulich School of Law where he received a Bachelor of Laws in 2010. Mark was called to the Newfoundland and Labrador Bar in April of 2011, and since then has practiced law in St. John's, most recently joining McDonald & Hounsell in November of 2015. Mark's practice areas include personal injury, criminal law, wills and estates, and real estate. Mark has been involved with some bands in the St. John's music scene and also enjoys writing when he can find the time.
